2015 America East Coach of the Year
2015 USILA North-South All-Star Game Head Coach
Ryan Curtis wrapped up his ninth season at Vermont in 2014-15 after being named men's lacrosse coach in September of 2006.
This past season, Curtis became the first-ever coach in program history to be named America East Coach of the Year. He guided the Catamounts to a program-record four victories in conference play as the team secured its best-ever seed in the conference playoffs. After the season, Curtis was selected as Head Coach of the North Team for the 2015 USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game.
In 2014, Curtis led Vermont to five victories in non-conference play, which marked the most for the team since the 2011 campaign when they also won five out-of-conference tilts. Curtis coached the America East Rookie of the Year in Ian MacKay, who became just the third Catamount in program history to garner the honor.
Vermont finished 2011 with a record of 6-9 overall and went 1-4 in America East play. After opening the year by winning three of their first four games, the Catamounts received votes in both the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and the USILA Division I Coaches Poll.
In 2010 the Catamounts made their first appearance in the America East playoffs since 2003, as they met #6 Stony Brook in the semifinals before falling 10-6.
Curtis spent eight years playing Major League Lacrosse for the Boston Cannons (2001-06, 2008) in Boston, Mass., and for the Washington Bayhawks (2007) in Washington, D.C. He was named a MLL All-Star five times and was named the MLL Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He was also named the Cannons' MVP on three occasions and was a three-time captain in Boston.
Curtis is a 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia and won a national championship with the Cavaliers in 1999. He was named a First Team NCAA All-American twice and was named the 1999 NCAA Defenseman of the Year. Curtis was also a two-time captain at UVA and was named to the 50th Anniversary All-ACC Team.
Curtis served as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth College men’s lacrosse team in 2006. With the Big Green, Curtis was involved with practice preparation, team and individual drills and worked closely with the defensive unit.
He was also a member of the United States National Lacrosse Team that participated in the World Championships and won a silver medal in 2006.
Curtis was named the Regional Advisor for the America East on the NCAA Championships Committee in 2012 and is also a member of the IMLCA Legislative Committee, USILA All-America Committee, USILA Poll Committee and the NCAA Rules Committee.
Ryan’s father Mike Curtis spent 14 years playing linebacker in the NFL from 1965-78. He spent 11 seasons with the Baltimore Colts and was a four-time Pro Bowler and a member of Baltimore’s 1971 Super Bowl V championship team.
A native of Potomac, Md., Curtis earned a B.A. in religious studies and history from UVA. He currently resides in Burlington with his wife Kelly and children Morgan and Dylan.
