Brian Kavanagh

Brian Kavanagh

Brian Kavanagh enters his fifth year as an assistant coach with the Vermont men's lacrosse program in 2021.

Vermont held a 3-1 record before the cancelation of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. After dropping the opener at Holy Cross (Feb. 15), the Catamounts rattled off three straight wins on Virtue Field, beating Quinnipiac (Feb. 22), Merrimack (Feb. 29), and Dartmouth (Mar. 7).

The 2019 season saw senior Warren Jeffrey and junior Nick Washuta earn spots on the America East All-Conference first team. Washuta recorded 10 or more saves in 13 games and earned America East Defensive Player of the Week honors four different times.

In 2018, Kavanagh helped the Catamount defense rank seventh-nationally and helped goalie Nick Washuta earn Inside Lacrosse Third Team All-America honors and lead the nation in save percentage (.609). Vermont's allowed 8.06 goals per game to rank seventh in the nation. Vermont held teams to 10 or less goals a total of 13 times.

As a team in 2017, Vermont led America East in saves per game (11.46), guided by the duo of Nick Washuta and Jon Kaplan. The pair helped UVM post at least 14 saves on five occasions throughout the season.

A 2014 Princeton graduate, Kavanagh made eight appearances in goal from 2012-14. As a sophomore in 2012, the Tigers reached the Ivy League Championship and ultimately punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The following season, Princeton returned to the conference final before falling to Yale.

As a senior in 2014, Kavanagh was honored as a recipient of the John. T. Schroeder Award, given annually to an individual who, through the embodiment of character and selfless devotion to the team, has had the greatest impact on the success of Princeton men’s lacrosse.

After wrapping up his collegiate career, Kavanagh returned to his home state and had coaching stints with FLG Lacrosse in Massapequa, New York and Pelham Youth Lacrosse in Pelham, New York. Most recently, he has worked with the goalies in the 3d Lacrosse program in Los Angeles and served as an assistant coach at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California.
