Athletic Medicine, a unit of the Center for Health and Wellbeing and comprised of the Team Physician and nine staff athletic trainers, serves the needs of student athletes at the University of Vermont. The Athletic Medicine Department works as a valued partner of the Department of Athletics in meeting its needs and achieving its goals.
In this context, Athletic Medicine's goals include:
- Providing quality medical care to all varsity student athletes at the University of Vermont.
- Collaborating effectively with all members of the Department of Athletics to achieve a consistently high level of success for both our individual student athletes and teams.
- Working as an essential support asset for assigned teams by upholding each team's structure, culture, and goals
- Creating a welcoming environment for individuals of all identities.
In achieving these goals, the staff in Athletic Medicine will uphold the highest level of professional standards in all of our interactions with student athletes. This includes:
- Providing care that is evidence-based, timely, and returns the student athlete to full participation as soon as is safely possible
- Working collaboratively within the athletic medicine staff and utilizing wider services both inside and out of CHWB as deemed appropriate by individual athletic trainers and the team physician. These include referrals to specialists at University of Vermont Orthopedics, nutrition services, sports psychology, mental health, chiropractic, and dental specialty services.
- Maintaining clear professional boundaries with students. We will at all times focus on the health needs of the student athlete and model behavior which is respectful of all – student athletes, coaches and staff, and opponents.
Strive to maintain robust and effective relationships with coaching staff, including coaches in Athletic Performance, by:
- Working to ensure that coaches clearly understand the health issues affecting their student athletes as well as timelines for returning them to full participation.
- Understanding that effective relationships with coaching staff are essential in creating successful, competitive programs. To this end, we will:
- Actively listen to the needs and concerns of coaching staff
- Address concerns promptly and directly with coaching staff
- Appreciate the unique leadership role coaches occupy in achieving success in competition and work to ally ourselves in that effort
