BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Vermont men's hockey program will honor its all-time leading scorer by hosting Martin St. Louis Night on Friday, Jan. 8 when the Catamounts face former ECAC rival Dartmouth at 7:05 p.m. Martin St. Louis '97 will be in attendance to be recognized during a special pre-game presentation on the ice at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
"I'm extremely honored and excited to be recognized by the University of Vermont with this tribute," said St. Louis. "My four years at UVM played a critical role in helping me achieve my dream of playing in the NHL and the energy and excitement that I experienced at Gutterson Fieldhouse will remain with me forever. I'm really looking forward to being back the Gut and reconnecting with college hockey's greatest fans."
During his four-year standout career at Vermont, St. Louis registered 267 points on 91 goals and 176 assists in 139 games. The forward led the Catamounts to their first-ever NCAA Frozen Four berth in 1996 and another NCAA Tournament appearance in 1997. For three straight seasons, St. Louis was named an All-American and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
St. Louis went on to play 16 seasons in the NHL for the Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers. He finished his NHL career with 391 goals and 642 assists for 1,033 points in 1,134 regular season games. He and former UVM teammate Eric Perrin '97 combined to win the 2004 Stanley Cup with the Lightning. That same season, the forward captured the Art Ross Trophy, the Hart Trophy, and the Ted Lindsay Award.
"We are really looking forward to honoring Marty, a legendary Catamount, future NHL Hall of Famer, and one of the greatest guys in the sport," said head coach
Kevin Sneddon. "This will be an evening to celebrate his accomplishments as well as thanking him for his contribution to hockey at all levels."
During his final NHL season, St. Louis became the 81st player in NHL history and only the sixth undrafted player to notch 1,000 career points. He won a total of seven major NHL awards and was selected to skate in seven NHL All-Star Games. St. Louis and former Catamount forward Patrick Sharp '02 also helped Canada claim the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
