BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men's and women's track & field teams kicked off the 2016-17 indoor season with a sweep over Hartford at Gardner-Collins Cage on Saturday. The women's team pocketed a 105-49 win over the Hawks, while the men came away with a 68-60 win.

Sophomore
Morgan Ferland topped the weight throw (13.98), followed by teammate
Sydney Kurtic (12.43).
Liann Simonds edged Ferland (11.06) and Kurtic (10.88) in the shot put, posting a 11.26 mark to take first as the Catamounts combined for 10 points.
Elsewhere in the field, senior
Cassie Roberge finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 10.94, while classmate
Mallory Honan (5.66) snagged first in the long jump over junior
Pearl Abiti (5.35).
Grace Weisbecker also registered a victory in the pole vault (3.65).
Gemma Del Rossi,
Smita Boesch-Dining,
Katie Nolan and
Lauren Trumble teamed up for a convincing distance medley win with a time of 12:31.12. UVM also edged Hartford in the 4x400 meter relay after Jess Cartier,
Ava Meyer,
Taylor Rosenblum and
Ali Belash turned in a 4:23.72 performance.
Action in the sprints saw Weisbecker (55-meter hurdles, 8.31) and
Taylor Rosenblum (55-meter, 7.51) lead Vermont.
Julie Richer (3000-meter, 10:37.55), Nolan (mile, 5:10.51), Boesch-Dining (800-meter, 2:24.22) and
Julia Nugent (500-meter, 1:22.49) also paced the Catamounts.
With a time of 10:27.48, the men's distance medley team of
Patrick Coppinger,
Taylor Kracher,
Allen Vance and
Chris Gish broke a Gardner-Collins Cage record. The previous mark (10:30.26) was set in 2015 by Kracher,
John Ferrone,
Dan DeLuna and
Fletcher Hazlehurst.
Shane O'Connor collected 10 points for the Catamounts in his collegiate debut, claiming the weight throw (11.49) and shot put (13.11), while senior
Ian Weider won the long jump (7.04). Backed by
Ahmed Noor, Ferrone,
Nick Smith and
Justin Liechty, the Catamounts pocketed five more points in the 4x400 relay (3:42.10).
Senior
Romario Bailey (55-meter, 6.51), Liechty (300-meter, 36.41) and Kracher (800-meter, 1:56.18) each were event champions.
Vermont now prepares to head to Boston for the Jay Carisella Invitational, taking place next Saturday (Dec. 10) at 3 p.m.
