Box Score
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Catamounts (2-2) while Rhode Island picked up its first win on the young season (1-2-2).
URI stormed out of the gate and wasted little time getting on the board in the first half. A UVM foul gave the Rams a free kick just outside the penalty area and Nicole Brennan sent a low left-footed shot past
Coco Speckmaier to give her team an early 1-0 lead.
Reigning America East Rookie of the Week
Julia Smith pulled the Catamounts even in the 22
nd minute with her third goal of the season.
Savana Yurick put a nice one-on-one move on a URI defender down the right flank before centering for Smith who finished low far-post for the equalizer.
URI had two other quality chances in the first half but both were foiled by UVM.
Meg James chased down a loose ball headed for an open net and cleared the line just before it crossed while Speckmaier made a kick save on a partial URI breakaway.
The second half was absent of any real quality scoring chances for either side although Rhode Island held the majority of the play as the game went to overtime tied 1-1.
Much like the first half, Rhode Island set the tone early in the extra frame and found the winner just five minutes in. URI's Wakeford ran onto a long through pass drawing Speckmaier out of her net then whiffed on an initial shot before sending the rebound home.
The Catamounts will continue a season-long five game homestand next weekend when they play host to Siena (Sept. 9 – 7 p.m.) on Friday and then Yale (Sept. 11 – 1 p.m.) on Sunday. Both games can be seen live and for free in HD via AmericaEast.TV.
