The America East Helping Hands Team, in its sixth year, was established to recognize a male and female student-athlete from each of the nine America East institutions for their exemplary efforts in the area of community service while remaining in good academic standing.
"This award exemplifies the conference's dedication to leadership on and off the field as one of its 3 Pillars," said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. "These 18 honorees are just a small sample of the countless student-athletes in America East who are committed to helping others and volunteering their own personal time to better their campuses and communities."
A junior on the men's lacrosse team Adam raised funds to bring Embrace Mental Health, a Chicago non-profit, to UVM's campus for a two-part series on suicide awareness and prevention. He shared his story of the loss of his brother during the series. He also led the men's lacrosse teams efforts with the Movember initiative, helping raise over $75,000 for the men's health organization over the last three years.
A senior on the women's soccer team Brooke was the chair of UVM's Student-Athlete Advisory Council this year she helped implement Spread Respect games, Rally Around Mental Health games, Rally Cup games, America East Food Frenzy, Faculty Appreciation Night and UVM's first-ever Better Together games. She also went on a service trip to Nashville and volunteered with C.U.R.E a non-profit that collects overstocked medical supplies and used medical equipment and ships it overseas to countries that need it.
Adam and Brooke were also the 2019 recipients of the Jeff Stone Memorial Award at the 2019 Rally Awards. The award recognizes exceptional contributions by a male and female student-athlete, in any class, in the area of community service and campus leadership. The award is presented in memory of Jeff Stone, an outstanding tennis player at UVM who died tragically in 1984.
