One of the top women’s distance runners in UVM history, Alanna Jones (Milton, Vt.) is still part of two record-setting relays today. A captain of the cross country and track and field teams for two years, Jones won both the New England (outdoors) and America East Championship (indoors) in the 800 meters during her career. She held the 1,000-meter indoor school record of 2:54.99 when she graduated, and also broke former Olympian Judi St. Hilaire’s 20-year school standard in the 800 meters (indoors) as a senior with a time of 2:09.84 to win the America East Championship in the event. Her conference winning time in the 800 was the second-fastest in America East history at the time and is now fourth overall. At the ECAC Championships during her senior year, she finished a strong third in an Olympic-caliber field.

Even 10 years after graduating, Jones’ name still stands in the UVM record books as she was a member of the top times in school history in both the 4x800 relay (9:01.54) and the sprint medley (3:57.91), both taking place in 2000. She also left Vermont as the school’s record holder in the 400 meters (outdoors) with a time of 56.97 and the second-fastest times in both the 500 meters outdoors (1:15.89) and 800 meters outdoors (2:09.89).

A consistent member of the America East All-Conference teams in both sports, Jones was also a two-time All-Region I performer in cross country. She also found time to give back to the community. A participant in UVM’s award-winning “Kids and Kops” program as a young girl, Jones has served as a role model for other kids as a UVM student-athlete, visiting many local schools to talk about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

She has also participated in the “Vermont I Love to Read” program; represented UVM student-athletes in a meeting with the UVM Board of Trustees; served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; and been a volunteer for the Kevin Roberson Memorial Run-Walk on campus.
