Charlie Claudio 1981 - Track and Field
A multi-talented track and field performer and 2000 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Charlie Claudio enjoyed an outstanding career at Vermont. Still the UVM record-holder in the discus (outdoors) and pentathlon (indoors) more than 15 years later, Claudio threw 158-5 while finishing second in the discus at the Eastern Championships in 1981. A two-time captain of both the indoor and outdoor teams, Claudio competed in a multitude of events during his four years at UVM.
In the 1979 Vermont state meet, he was third in the 120-yard high hurdles, second in the discus and first in the hammer throw and high jump. He was fourth in the Yankee Conference in the high jump in 1979, and he finished fourth in the decathlon at the 1979 New England Outdoor Championships. In fact, Claudio held the UVM record in the decathlon - 6,388 points - until 1990, when Dan Bokan surpassed his total with a 6,510-point effort. In 1980, Claudio finished second in the Vermont State Meet in three events - shot put, discus and high jump. In his outdoor career, he competed in the decathlon, high jump, long jump, high hurdles, discus, shot put, hammer throw and javelin. He was named Most Valuable Performer in 1981. That year, Claudio won the decathlon at the prestigious Boston College Relays.
Indoors, Claudio also excelled in many different events as well. He was his team's best performer in the 35-pound weight, shot put and high jump in 1978, and finished second in the Yankee Conference and fourth in New England in the high jump in 1979, jumping 6-feet-7. And, he is set the UVM record in the pentathlon scoring 3,479 points in 1981. Claudio served as an assistant track and field coach at Brown for a year after graduating from UVM.
