Dan Martin 1968 - Football

A captain of the football team and a hard-nosed lineman who opened holes for All-American and UVM Athletic Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell, Dan Martin, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 2001, has stayed active in football.

Named All-Yankee Conference and second-team UPI All-New England in 1966, Martin was the offensive guard who led the way for Mitchell's record-breaking runs around the end. A three-year starter, the 5-10, 212-pound guard was the leader of the Golden Wave, the nickname given to the offensive unit. Prior to 1966, only twelve other Catamounts had been named to a first team, All-Yankee Conference football team in fifteen years. An all-state player twice, Martin was honorable mention All-Yankee Conference as a senior. He also finished second runner-up in the New England Unsung Hero Award as selected by The Boston Globe.

Upon his graduation from UVM with a degree in business administration, Martin was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He completed a tour of duty in South Vietnam as an airborne Ranger and received three Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and a Vietnamese Gallantry Cross.

In his post-Army years, Martin has been the general manager of Chromium Process Company in Connecticut. He has stayed active in football, serving as an official for more than 25 years, working high school and college games in Connecticut. He has also worked numerous Division III playoff games.

A past president of the Gene Casey Chapter of the Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, he has served as chairman of the Scholar-Athlete award for 20 years. He also helped organize a high school football all-star game in Connecticut. An active civic volunteer, Martin has served in various capacities with the United Way, Valley YMCA, Boy's Club and the New Haven Football Officials Association.
