Lambert served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Vermont for 19 years from 1973-92. After retirement, he was honored with the Vermont State Athletic Directors Association Distinguished Service Award in 1992 and the ECAC's James Lynah Distinguished Achievement Award in 1995. During his tenure, the UVM ski team won four national titles (1980, 1989, 1990, 1992) and the men's soccer program captured back-to-back America East Championships (1989, 1990). Men's hockey won the Division II ECAC Championship in 1974, moved to Division I for the 1974-75 season, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1988. Women's basketball won the 1992 North Atlantic Conference Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
