Dr. Hyman "Bumps" Levine 1930 - Football
One of the top football linemen UVM has ever had, Hyman "Bumps" Levine, a 1977 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, played consistent offense (center) and defense (tackle) for the Catamounts.
Captain of the team as a senior in 1929, Levine earned All-New England honors as a tackle in 1928 and 1929. Acquiring his nickname due to his efforts on the field and in the ring (he was a wrestler and boxer), "Bumps" came easily to his outstanding talent early on.
Born and raised in Burlington, he practiced medicine throughout his life following his graduation from UVM's Medical School in 1939. He also assistant coached UVM from 1931 to 1939, while in Medical School. He was offered a contract with the Green Bay Packers but he declined in order to keep coaching and stay on the PE staff at Vermont.
One of Vermont's most involved individuals, Levine found time for nearly any organization, association, board, or service, as he was a member of the UVM Alumni Association, the Centennial Club, the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame Committee (he served one year as chair), and the Medical School Committee. The city physician in Burlington for numerous years, Levine officiated basketball throughout Vermont and New England and served as Deputy Boxing Commissioner for the State of Vermont from 1961-68. Levine also served on the boxing commission, along with the NH-VT Shrine Football committee and many other organizations.
