Dr, John W. Durkin, Jr. 1947 - Baseball, Basketball
Although Dr. John Durkin only competed two years for the Green and Gold, they were meaningful seasons. An all-state performer in basketball and baseball, he was a member of the 1946-47 Catamount basketball team that went 19-3, the best record in UVM history. He is the third member of that celebrated team to enter UVM's Athletic Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 1981. Larry Killick '47 was inducted in 1969, the inaugural year of the Athletic Hall of Fame; Ed Kotlarczyk '50 in 1979.
In baseball, Dr. Durkin was the starting shortstop for two seasons. Prior to attending UVM, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 before enrolling at Green Mountain College where he was a two-year starter in four sports. He enrolled at UVM in the fall of 2946. While attending medical school at UVM, this outstanding athlete played semi-pro baseball in the Northern League.
Dr. Durkin retired as an emeritus professor of Obstetrics-Gynecology at the University of West Virginia School of Medicine.
