Fred D. Carpenter Special Inductee - Coach
Fred D. Carpenter, was the first non-alumnus of the University of Vermont to be inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame as a special inductee in 1971.
Called the "Father of University of Vermont Tennis", he dedicated his services to the tennis team as coach for 30 years, receiving no salary. Carpenter was a professor of German at the University and also dedicated his services to the entire athletic program, not just the tennis team.
While at the university, Carpenter was a member of Vermont's Athletic Council for 30 years, serving most of those years as its secretary. He also was the chairman of the council for one year. He is a graduate of Trinity (Conn.) College.
