Frederick R. Kolstrom 1960 - Cross Country, Skiing, Track and Field
This former standout runner was a letter winner in cross country, track and field and skiing while at UVM. An honorary co-captain of the freshman cross-country team, Kolstrom, a 1994 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, went on to place 13th in the 1957 New England Cross Country championships. In 1958, as a junior, he placed third, and as a senior he was 2nd overall.
It was 1958 that Kolstrom and fellow Hall-of-Famer Ray Allen led the Catamounts to Yankee Conference and New England titles. Kolstrom, a co-captain of cross-country as a senior, was elected to sigma Delta Psi (athletic honorary) in 1960. In addition to running cross-country, Kolstrom was also a member of the varsity track team and the 1960 ski team. In track, he ran the mile and two-mile, breaking the state record in 1960 in the two-mile run. He also won the one-mile run at the state meet in 1958, and was elected co-captain of the team in 1959. In his first and only year of skiing, he placed 15th in cross-country at the Eastern Championships.
After UVM, Kolstrom served in the Army. While assigned to the 24th Infantry Division in 1962, he broke the division record for the 12-mile forced march. And later that year, he was assigned to a team that represented the United States in the Military Pentathlon in Rome. Kolstrom continued his love of running, participating in the Boston Marathon in 1970 and Tulaso Marathon in 1980.
