Geoff Greig 1977 - Soccer

An all-region and all-conference midfielder, Geoff Greig, a 1994 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, and fellow Hall of Famers Carl Christensen and John Koerner were the backbones of some of the finest men's soccer teams in UVM history during the mid-70s.

A four-year letterwinner and one of the Vermont's top career scorers, Greig finished his career with 18 goals and 11 assists for 47 points. When he graduated he ranked in the top-10 in goals, assists and points. He turned it on in his final two seasons accounting for 16 goals in 1976 and 1977, including 10 in his senior campaign. Greig was the third leading scorer, and top scoring midfielder, in New England as a senior. After each of the 1976 and 1977 seasons, he was named to the All-New England and All-Yankee Conference teams and he participated in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League All-Star game in 1977.

During Greig's four-year career, the Catamounts were 39-13-4 and won a Yankee Conference championship. The team also participated in two NCAA tournaments during that time frame. His coach at UVM, Paul Reinhardt, appreciated the skills Greig brought to the team during his career. "Geoff was a totally dedicated, hard-working athlete who always had a personal and future goal to achieve and never gave up until it was reached," Reinhardt said. "His style and achievements at Vermont will serve as a standard for all to follow."

A member of the "B" ski team as a freshman, Greig went on to play professional soccer for several teams. He began by training with West Ham United of the English First Division, and then returned to North America and played with professional teams in the American Soccer League, the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and the Southern California Soccer League.

In 1977, following his senior season, Geoff Greig was named co-winner of the Hal Greig Award along with classmate and fellow Hall of Famer Carl Christensen. The award, named after Geoff's father, is given each year to the player or players who, through their desire, hustle and love of soccer, has done the most for the program. Christensen and Greig, both natives of Essex Junction, are joined by their fathers in the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame.
