"Diamond Jim" Montgomery, a 1981 Hall of Fame inductee, was one of UVM's most respected athletes in the early 50's, starting in both football and baseball for three seasons.

He captained the 1953 football team when he was an All-State selectee, leading the team in all defensive categories, in addition to gaining 1,041 yards as a fullback.

In baseball, Montgomery was the regular shortstop for three seasons. He hit over .300 in 1953 and 1954.

A the senior awards banquet, Montgomery was the recipient of the Sunderland Trophy (to the athlete who" displayed qualities of character and leadership") and the Stroh Trophy presented to the baseball player who led the team in RBI's.

Montgomery went on to coach baseball at East Orange, N.J. for five seasons.
