Janet E. Terp 1980 - Track and Field
The 1980 winner of the Semans Trophy for leadership, loyalty and service to the university, Janet Terp, a 1980 Hall of Fame inductee, was an outstanding all-around track and field athlete who eventually became an assistant coach at UVM.
She had a brilliant outdoor season her senior year winning the long jump at the New Englands (19'4 1/2") to set a meet, school and New England record and captured the pentathlon title at the 1980 EAIAW Championships establishing eastern, school and meet records with 3,869 points. She also competed in the National AIAW Championships in Eugene, Ore. placing ninth in the pentathlon.
Terp won the pentathlon event at the 1979 New Englands and Easterns and the 1980 New England AAU title. She also won the long jump and high jump at the New England AAU Championships, establishing meet records in both in 1980. Terp went on to set UVM records in both the high jump (5'9") and the pentathlon (3,869 points). She served as co-captain of the track and field teams in 1978-79 and 1979-80 and was named the team's MVP in track and field her senior year.
While at UVM, she was also selected to the USA East Team at the 1979 National Olympic Sports Festival. She was also a 1980-81 recipient of the Who's Who in Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges. Terp later served as an assistant men and women's track and field coach at Vermont from 1982-86 and was a graduate assistant in UVM's Office of Student Services in 1988-89.
