Katrina Geurkink 1983 - Track and Field
An intense competitor and 1999 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Katrina Geurkink was set the outdoor shot put school record that stood more than fifteen years.
Geurkink's outdoor shot-put record of 46-1, set in 1983, stood as the standard of all UVM women throwers. She set the record in the New England Outdoor Championships as a senior to win the event. In that same championship meet, Geurkink was second in the discus. She also held the UVM outdoor record in the discus for many years with a throw of 147-2.
Indoors, Geurkink also excelled. She set the UVM record in the shot put - also 46-1 - which she set in winning the New England Championships in 1983. She was also third in the IC4A Championships that same year. "She came in as a freshman and just took over the weight events," Kusiak remembered. Geurkink was a captain of the team as a senior.
Geurkink received her graduate and undergraduate degrees from UVM. She earned her master's degree in education with a specialization in Organizational Development. Successful in private business, Geurkink credits much of her success in business to lessons learned and experienced as an athlete: the discipline, commitment, aspiring to high levels of performance; and the people who coached, supported and inspired her during her days as a UVM student-athlete.
