Kevin Sullivan 1982 - Swimming

A 2004 UVM Hall of Fame inductee who was a two-time co-captain of the swim team, Kevin Sullivan set varsity records in six events and was one of the top freestylers in the Yankee Conference and New England.

The 1982 winner of the Semans Trophy, presented annually to the male and female athletes who have earned the respect and regard of their fellow students for leadership, loyalty and service to the university and active participation in athletics, Sullivan also competed in cross country as a senior, earning a letter.

In the pool he established records in the 1,650 freestyle (17:09.50), 1,000 freestyle (10:17.8), 500 freestyle (4:50.01), 200 freestyle (1:47.23) and the 400 individual medley (4:30.38). He was also the anchor of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay team (7:20.89) and established freshman marks in the 500 freestyle and was the anchor on the record-setting 400 freestyle relay team. Sullivan was awarded the Peter Gross Award as UVM's Swimmer of the Year as a senior. That year, he was named All-New England in both the 1,650 freestyle and 500 freestyle, finishing sixth in both events. He also placed 10th in the 200 freestyle. In his four years of competing, he scored points in four straight New England Championships.

"Kevin was an outstanding swimmer and he certainly deserves recognition in the Hall of Fame," his coach Joe Fischer said.

Since graduating from UVM, he has continued to be associated with swimming, either as a coach or as a competitor in Masters swim competitions. He has also competed in several triathlons. Some of his post-UVM honors include a first-place finishes in the 1989 Eastern New England Masters Swimming Championships in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events and a first-place in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. He also earned first place in the same events in 1991. Sullivan has finished as high as second in the Dedham (Mass.) Triathlon and was ninth in the 1983 Windjammer/Head Triathlon and 22nd at the 1984 Seaside Triathlon, two of the most difficult circuits in New England.

Now an attorney with the firm of Callan, Sullivan and Burke in Lowell, Mass., Sullivan is married to former UVM standout swimmer, Patsy de Marcken Sullivan, a 1993 Hall of Fame inductee.
