Sharon Bay 1993 - Basketball

An instrumental player on the best teams in Vermont women's basketball history, Sharon Bay finished her career fifth all-time in scoring with 1,252 points and was inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 2003. She also ranked second in rebounds and blocked shots while being in the top ten in field goals, free throws, free throw percentage, and steals. Along with Sheri Turnbull '94, she formed one of the best frontcourt tandems in the program's history.

A member of the America East (then-North Atlantic Conference) All-Rookie team in 1990, she twice earned all-conference honors including a spot on the first team as a senior in 1993. Three times she was named to the All-Championship team and twice (1992 and 1993) she was the championship's Most Outstanding Player.

A native of Portland, Maine, Bay was a four-year starter for coach Cathy Inglese. As a sophomore she averaged 11 points and was fourth in the conference in rebounds at 7.3 per game as Vermont won 20 games (22-7) and went to the conference title game for the first time ever.

The next season, Bay was a key contributor as Vermont captivated the state and region with a 29-0 regular season, winning the NAC regular season and conference titles and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Bay was fourth in the conference in scoring (15.9 ppg) and third in rebounds (8.6 pg). After missing three late-season games with an ankle injury, she bounced back to lead the team in scoring (17.5 ppg in two games) in the NAC tournament and was named the tourney Most Outstanding Player.

The Catamounts repeated in Bay's senior season, going 28-0 in the regular season running through the conference tournament. She averaged 14.1 points per and 8.7 rebounds per game to earn first team all-conference honors. Again named the tourney MVP, she set two conference championship rebounding records that stand Most Outstanding Player. She had a single-game record 21 rebounds in the semifinal win over Delaware and had a tournament-high 41 rebounds.

An excellent student at UVM who received her degree in business administration, she was on the dean's list all four years, on the conference's first academic honor roll in 1993 and that season was the NAC Scholar-Athlete for women's basketball.
