BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont women's hockey head coach
Jim Plumer has selected three players to lead the Catamounts in the 2020-21 campaign.
Kristina Shanahan will captain UVM with
Sini Karjalainen and
Lilly Holmes serving as assistant captains.
"I am really looking forward to working with this group and seeing them continue the great leadership shown by this year's captains," Plumer said. "Tina, Sini, and Lilly represent everything that UVM women's hockey is about. They are hard-working student-athletes with great integrity and a passion for hockey and UVM."
An assistant captain as a junior last season, Shanahan will lead the Green & Gold after posting a career-high 21 points last season. The Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Québec native netted a career-best 13 goals, which was second on the Catamounts. The rising senior has accrued 51 points (25 goals, 26 assists) in 107 collegiate games.
Karjalainen will be wearing a letter for the first time in her career. The rising junior tallied 24 points on the blue line last season with five goals and 19 assists. Her 19 helpers was a single-season record among Vermont defensemen. As a sophomore, she also produced the first four-assist game in Division-I program history on the road at Merrimack. The Posio, Finland native was selected to represent her home country in the 2020 IIHF Women's World Championship, prior to its cancellation due to COVID-19.
Holmes will enter her junior season donning the 'A' for the first time. The Saratoga Springs, New York native registered five points last season, which included a shorthanded goal against New Hampshire. The forward has struck twice on the penalty kill in her collegiate career.
