LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Vermont Catamounts own an 84-point lead over Dartmouth and New Hampshire (403 pts) after the first day of racing at the EISA Championships hosted by St. Lawrence at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, New York.
The UVM women led the way on Day 1 for the Catamounts. The women's alpine team totaled 134 points to take first in the giant slalom team standings and the women's Nordic team placed first in the freestyle race team standings with 124 points.
Kristina Riis-Johannessen led Vermont to a 1-2 finish in the GS. Riis-Johannessen had the top time in each run down the hill and finished with a winning time of 2:10.76. It was her fifth victory of the season and third GS win of the year.
Elli Terwiel placed second to earn her fifth podium appearance of the year and
Brittany Lathrop added a sixth place finish to round out the scoring skiers for the Catamounts.
In the men's GS race,
Will St. Germain earned his third win of the year and first giant slalom victory of the season to complete the sweep for the Catamounts. He posted a winning time of 2:07.34.
Taylor Wunsch finished 11th and
Sandy Vietze was 16th to close out UVM's top three racers.
The Vermont women finished 3-4-5-6 in the freestyle Nordic race.
Stephanie Kirk earned her first podium appearance of the season, placing third with a time of 16:09.9.
Teammates
Alayna Sonnesyn,
Marion Woods and
MK Cirelli, followed in fourth through sixth, respectively, as the Catamounts dominated the top-10 finishers.
Heather Mooney of Middlebury earned another win on the EISA Circuit this season, posting a winning time of 15:51.2. Annika Taylor of New Hampshire placed second to round out the podium.
In the men's freestyle race, Dartmouth's Patrick Caldwell posted a winning time of 27:16.7. Vermont senior
Rogan Brown finished second, earning his fourth podium appearance of the year and Jan Ketterson of the Big Green was third.
Jorgen Grav finished just off the podium in fourth and
Jack Hegman and
Cole Morgan placed seventh and eighth, respectively, to give UVM four skiers in the top-10.
