BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont women's basketball has announced a signing class of three for the 2017-18 season, adding Kianna Funderburk, Carmen Handy and Josie Larkins to the program. Head coach
Chris Day made the announcement on Thursday.
"We are very excited to welcome Josie, Kianna and Carmen to our UVM family," said Day. "We look forward to their contributions to our program and cannot wait to bring them on campus this summer."
Below are details on each member of the class:
Kianna Funderburk • 5'9" • Guard • Charlotte, North Carolina • Myers Park High School
A four-year letterwinner at Myers Park, Funderburk helped the Mustangs to a state championship in 2014-15, later capturing SW4A All-Conference honors as a junior and senior. She also has guided her teammates as a captain. As a junior in 2015-16, she was selected to the Title IX Tournament All-Tournament Team, following that with a Charlotte Post Top Senior nomination and selection to play in the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game. Funderburk's sister, Kia, played college basketball at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. Kianna was intrigued by the UVM environment as well as the opportunities it presents both in basketball and for personal growth.
Funderburk on UVM: "UVM is an awesome environment with great individuals. It is a great opportunity for personal growth and to play basketball."
Day on Funderburk: "We are thrilled that Kianna has belief in our vision for her and our program. We expect her to make an immediate impact."
Carmen Handy • 6'3" • Forward/Center • Sarnia, Ontario • Northern Collegiate Institute
The sister of current Vermont sophomore
Lauren Handy, Carmen Handy is a previous JUEL Prep All-Star selection (2015) and part of the Canada Basketball TAS Program (2014-15). Handy was also named to the Team Ontario U15 Development Team (2012) and Team Ontario U14 Team (2013). She received two training camp invitations from the Canadian National Team. At Northern Collegiate Institute, she averaged a double-double as a junior in 2015-16 with 15 points per game to go with 10 assists on a nightly basis. She also contributed nine rebounds and helped her squad to three consecutive city championships. As a sophomore in 2014-15, she turned in 10 points per game and seven boards. She is interested in a pre-med academic concentration.
Handy on UVM: "UVM is a great academic school and has a great women's basketball team."
Day on Handy: "I am so happy that Carmen has decided to join her sister, Lauren, here at UVM. Carmen's versatility will be a much needed asset to our team."
Josie Larkins • 5'9" • Guard • Lincroft, New Jersey • Red Bank Catholic
Larkins is a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter in basketball and also played one season of softball. Totaling 1,138 points during her career, she sits sixth in Red Bank Catholic history. Larkins also owns the second spot in career 3-pointers (163). She also won division championships in 2015 and 2016, picking up All-Division Second Team honors (2015) as well as First Team mention in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, Red Bank Catholic won both the South Jersey Non-Public A State Sectional and State Group championships. Larkins averaged 10 points per game as a junior, guiding Red Bank in the Shore Conference. Academically, she is interested in exercise and movement science.
Larkins played in 116 consecutive varsity games to tie a school record, capturing 90 wins in the process.
Larkins on UVM: "I enjoyed the team chemistry and the city of Burlington. UVM has a lot of what I was looking for both academically and athletically."
Day on Larkins: "Josie is one of the best shooters in the Northeast region at the high school level. We are very excited that Josie chose to be a part of our family."
