VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior
Brad Cole converted a penalty kick in the 109th minute to lift the Vermont Catamounts to a 1-0 victory at Binghamton in America East men's soccer action on Saturday night in front of 1,604 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It was Binghamton's first league loss of the season.
In the closing minute of the game, Binghamton was called for a handball inside the penalty box to set up the Vermont penalty kick. Cole slid a shot to the lower left corner for his second goal of his career. Cole's first career goal was also a game-winning penalty kick in UVM's 2-1 victory over La Salle on September 5.
"I'm proud of the effort tonight," said Vermont head coach
Jesse Cormier. "Coming off an overtime game at UMass Lowell and to go back into overtime tonight is tough. Binghamton showed a lot of heart and soul in the match and I thought our guys showed great character and mental toughness to get points on the road. Now we get to come home for a couple matches and try to put ourselves in better position as the playoffs draw closer."
Vermont moves into second place in the America East standings and improves to 7-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. Binghamton falls to 4-9 on the year and falls to 2-1 in America East.
The Catamounts host Hartford on Saturday, October 25 at Virtue Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets to the game can be purchased online at
