BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman

The Catamounts snap an eight game winless streak and improve to 1-1 in America East and 3-7-1 overall. UMBC opens league play at 0-1 and falls to 8-3 on the year.
Vermont's
Nikki McFarland rang a shot off the cross bar and the ensuing scramble on the rebound resulted in a corner kick for the Catamounts. Martin's service off the corner was knocked into the net by freshman
Rylee Osgood to put Vermont on the board 1-0 in the 23rd minute of action. It was Osgood's first career goal.
Vermont took the one goal lead and a 7-4 advantage in shots into halftime.
UVM extended its lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute. Sophomore
Meg James served a long ball from the defensive third of the field up to the attack. Martin was able to collect the pass, settle it and fire off what proved to be the game-winning goal from just inside the penalty area. It was Martin's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
UMBC increased the pressure on the UVM defense and sliced the lead to one in the 83rd minute. Lisa Nanov won a ball along the endline and served up a short cross to Lilly Rydon who was able to flick it past UVM goalkeeper
Ally Ramos.
The Catamounts held off a furious series of challenges from the Retrievers in the final minutes to preserve the victory.
Ramos finished the day with four saves in the Vermont net, while Jen Nance was credited with two stops for UMBC.
