FINAL SCORE: No. 13 Vermont 2, No. 20 Notre Dame 2 | HighlightsSOUTH BEND, Ind. – Colin Markison stuck home a rebound with 40 seconds left in regulation as 13
th-ranked Vermont battled back from two goals down in the third period for a 2-2 tie against No. 20 Notre Dame on Saturday night in Hockey East action at the Compton Family Ice Arena. The Catamounts move to 4-1-1 (2-1-1 HEA), while the Fighting Irish push its record to 5-2-1 (1-1-0 HEA).
Â
"I was certainly proud of the guys for their relentless approach and resilience in the third period, but we certainly did not play well the first two periods and I give credit to Notre Dame for how well they played," said head coach
Kevin Sneddon. "We've got to find that urgency and relentlessness right out of the gate next week against Maine."
Hoffman came out strong in the first period with 10 saves, including a stop on a partial breakaway for Anders Bjork with 1:45 left in the frame. Bjork attemped to deke to his backhand and slide the puck five-hole on Hoffman, but the junior closed his pads to keep the game scoreless. Notre Dame held a 10-7 shot advantage in the first period and both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
Â
Notre Dame grabbed the lead early in the second period after a giveaway in the Vermont defensive zone. The Catamounts coughed the puck up in the slot and Jake Evans whipped a quick shot blocker side past Hoffman to opening the scoring at the 1:32 mark.
Â
The Fighting Irish doubled its cushion at 7:09, taking advantage of another UVM turnover. Vince Hinostroza found Peter Shneider in the left faceoff circle, and he quickly dished a feed across the zone to Mario Lucia inside the right circle. Lucia's one-timer beat Hoffman before he could slide across the crease for a 2-0 Notre Dame lead.
Â
Vermont earned a lengthy 5-on-3 late in the frame but could not find the net. Thomas DiPauli blocked two key shots on the two-man advantage, and Cal Peterson denied
Jake Fallon on a 2-on-1 at the right post as time expired on the period.
Â
The Catamounts cut the lead to one early in the third period after a net-front scramble. With Peterson out of position to the left of his crease,
Brady Shaw poked a loose puck past a pair or Irish players into the net to make it a 2-1 game.
Mike Stenerson and Markison collected the assists on the play at 5:17.
Â
UVM pressed for an equalizer and out-shot Notre Dame 17-7 in the final frame but still trailed heading into the final minutes. Hoffman was pulled for an extra skater with just over a minute left and
Mario Puskarich found himself open for a wrist shot in the left circle. The initial attempt was blocked in front, but Markison found the rebound at the top of the crease and buried it to tie the game at two.
Â
"It was kind of a pile at the net and the guys did everything you want them to do with the extra attacker," said Sneddon. "We had great net front presence and persistence."
Â
Fallon had a chance to win the game in overtime but his opportunity was stuffed at the left post by Peterson and the puck deflected wide. Vermont finished the night with a 44-28 advantage in shots, out-shooting the Irish by 29 on the weekend, and the teams combined for an 0-for-6 effort on the power play. Hoffman made 26 saves for UVM, while Peterson stopped 42 shots for Notre Dame.
