NEW BRITIAN, Conn. – Amanda Harrington put back her own miss with one second left to lift the Central Connecticut Blue Devils past Vermont, 77-75, in overtime at Detrick Gymnasium on Tuesday in non-conference women's basketball action. CCSU moves to 3-2 overall, while Vermont falls to 0-4.
Kylie Atwood and
Emilie Cloutier led all five Catamount starters in double figures with 13 points each.
Niki Taylor posted her seventh career double-double and second of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Kylie Butler added 12 points and
Sydney Smith chipped in 11 points.
Lauren Wolosik led all scorers with 17 points and was one of five Blue Devils to reach double figures.
"I am very proud of the effort and the fight in this group tonight," said Vermont head coach
Lori Gear McBride. "We battled and we played hard and did everything we needed to do. A couple of bounces the other way and we win. It's hard to see this result for a team that is working so hard to get over that hump, but we are right there. I can't ask any more from this team they are giving it everything they have."
The Catamounts erased a pair of double-digit deficits in each half. UVM trailed by 13 after falling behind 14-1 to open the game. Vermont closed to within four, 31-27, with six straight points to close the half.
Central Connecticut pushed back out to a 10-point advantage with 9:46 remaining in the second half. UVM used a 13-3 run to tie the game up at 52 with 4:10 left.
The two teams traded the lead seven times over the next four minutes. A layup by Cloutier with 1:21 left pushed Vermont in front, 59-58, but CCSU answered with a jumper by Kayla Miller to re-take a one-point lead, 60-59, with 1:05 left.
Butler made one of two free throws with 47 seconds left in regulation to tie the game up for the fourth time in the final four minutes.
Cloutier had two contested looks in the final seven seconds to net the game-winner, but neither attempt fell for the Catamounts.
CCSU pushed out to a seven-point lead at the 2:22 mark of overtime. The Catamounts battled back and Burchill's step back 3-pointer with 10 seconds left knotted the score up at 75. The Blue Devils pushed the ball up the floor and Harrington was able to find the game-winning shot with one second left.
