NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Ryan Taylor scored in the 69th minute to lift the Central Connecticut Blue Devils past visiting Vermont in the Catamounts final non-conference road game of the regular season.
Vermont falls to 5-3-1 overall and Central Connecticut moves to 4-3-0 on the season.
"I felt that we were capable of winning this game but we did not do enough in the final third," said Vermont head coach Jesse Cormier. "We had a lot of good chances to equalize, but it was disappointing that we could not get that finishing touch. We will be working hard in training to get that fixed before we head into conference play. I do want to credit the guys who played a full 90 minutes out there today after playing a double-overtime match on Friday. They showed great effort and a lot of heart." Both teams played through a scoreless first half, but both teams also went down a man with 1:39 remaining in the first stanza. UVM's
Carter Lincoln and CCSU's Dan Casey were issued red cards after a play off the ball.
The two teams played the final 1:39 of the first stanza and the entire second half with 10 men each.
In the 69th minute, UVM goalkeeper
Conor Leland punched a shot out past the penalty box, but Filosmar Cordiero picked up the loose ball and dribbled it along the endline. He sent a short cross in front of the net and Taylor was able to one-time the finish to give CCSU the 1-0 lead.
Vermont's best scoring opportunity came with just under 10 minutes remaining in the match. There was a big scramble in front of the net, but the Catamounts could not find the back of the net.
Leland was credited with two stops for Vermont, while Josef Abele made four saves for Central Connecticut. The Catamounts held a 9-8 advantage in shots and 8-4 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Vermont closes out the non-conference slate hosting Dartmouth on Wednesday (Oct. 1) at 3 p.m. at Virtue Field. The game will be streamed online for free in HD via
