BOSTON – Maddie Elia scored two goals and added an assist to lead No. 10 Boston University to a 5-2 win over Vermont Sunday afternoon in Hockey East action at Walter Brown Arena.

Just 59 seconds later Sarah Steele made it a two-goal cushion with a coast-to-coast individual effort. Steele won a puck battle in the neutral zone and skated back into the Terriers end before collecting speed and entering the Vermont zone. Steele skated wide to beat a Vermont defender and cut to the net where she beat Depew with a quick low shot for her first goal of the season.
With 2:52 left in the first period the Terriers took a commanding lead with Rebecca Russo's fourth goal of the season. Elia corralled a puck in the corner and centered a pass that Russo blasted home for her fourth goal of the season.
Seconds after the Russo tally the Catamounts earned a power play opportunity and cashed in late in the first period.
Alyssa Gorecki carried the puck into the Terriers zone and behind the net before passing out to
Sammy Kolowrat at the point. Kolowrat shot through traffic from the point and
Dayna Colang redirected it in for her third goal in as many games for Vermont. Gorecki and Kolowrat each earned their first career collegiate point with assists on the goal.
The Terriers reestablished their three-goal lead with 57 seconds left in the second period. By the blue line the puck took a fortuitous bounce off a Vermont defender and Elia gathered the puck, skated in on Depew and beat her with a backhand move.
At the 10:21 mark of the third period Elia struck again to stretch the Terriers lead to four goals. Alexis Crossley fired a shot from the point and Elia redirected it from the slot for her third goal of the season and her fourth career multi-goal game.
The Catamounts quickly responded with their own goal 24 seconds later.
Rachael Ade dumped a puck into the Boston University zone and she won the race to the puck. Ade quickly gathered the puck and beat the Terriers Erin O'Neil with a wraparound for her first goal of the season.
Cassidy Campeau pick up her first point of the season with an assist on Ade's second career goal.
The Terriers held the Catamounts in check over the final nine minutes as they snapped a three-game losing streak with the 5-2 win. O'Neil made 23 saves for the Terriers as she picked up her second win of the year. Depew made 34 saves in net for Vermont, the second highest total of her career.
"I'm disappointed in the way we came out and let them dictate the pace of the game early in the first period," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "We've simply got to show more maturity and be able to rise to the occasion more consistently."
Vermont returns home next weekend to host New Hampshire and Maine in Hockey East action. The Catamounts face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Friday night, Capital Candy will be sponsoring a giveaway, all kids in costume receive a goodie bag. Sunday will be poster day as Vermont hosts the Black Bears. Following the game, the Catamounts will sign the posters which are presented by the UPS Store Downtown.
