BURLINGTON, Vt. – Mike Rooney and Challen Rogers combined for 17 points to lead Stony Brook past Vermont, 21-12, in America East men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field. Stony Brook improved to 7-2 on the year and 2-1 in conference, while Vermont dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Rooney topped all scorers with 11 points on three goals and eight assists, and Rogers (5 g, 1 ast) and Brody Eastwood (4 g) helped pace the Seavwolves' attack in the victory with multi-point performances.
Dyson White and
Ian MacKay led the Catamounts with three goals apiece, while
James Barlow and
Michael Clarke added two goals and one assist each. Rookie
Graham Bocklet tallied his first career goal in the fourth quarter off a feed from goalie
Justin Rosenberg, who carried the ball all the way up field and found the open Bocklet. The assist for Rosenberg was also the first of his career.
Brandon Maciejewski stopped five shots to earn the win for Stony Brook, while
Jon Kaplan and Rosenberg combined to make nine saves in the UVM cage. Rosenberg came in the contest with just over 11 minutes remaining and stopped four shots.
Barlow and
Dyson White scored two of the opening three goals to give UVM an early advantage, but Stony Brook was able to tally four goals in the final eight minutes of the first period, including a pair from McLean Chicquen, to open a 5-3 lead at the end of one.
The second period belonged to Stony Brook as the Seawolves outscored Vermont 8-1 in the frame to widen its lead to 13-4 heading into halftime. Eastwood, Rogers and Chris Hughes each picked up a pair of tallies in the period to pace the Seawolves, while White notched the lone tally for the Catamounts off an assist by
Ben Cox.
With Stony Brook holding a decisive advantage midway through the third frame, the Catamounts scored three straight to cut into the deficit. Vermont added two more goals before the period's end on tallies by Clarke and MacKay, and the Catamounts headed into the final stanza trailing, 19-9.
After a pair of Stony Brook tallies to open the fourth quarter, Vermont scored three straight, including Bocklet's first of his career, to cut the deficit to 21-12. That was as close as the Catamounts would get, as Stony Brook closed out its seventh win of the year.
