FINAL SCORE: Vermont 11, UMBC 10 | Box Score
BALTIMORE, Md. – Ian MacKay's tally with just 1:08 remianing capped off a big Vermont comeback as the Catamounts topped UMBC, 11-10, in an America East matchup Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
Cam Milligan picked up a lose ball and sent a pass over to MacKay, who fired a shot past UMBC goalie Ruston Souder to give Vermont its first lead of the contest with just over a minute showing on the clock. UVM goalie
Justin Rosenberg came up big on an ensuing attack by UMBC, making a point blank save to preserve the Catamount victory.
UVM trailed by a score of 8-3 in the third period, before tallying eight of the final 10 goals of the contest to complete the comeback.
Milligan led all scorers with six points (2 g, 4 ast) in the game, while MacKay (3 g, 2 ast) and
James Barlow (2 g, 1 ast) each picked up multi-goal performances. Rosenberg made a season-high 18 saves in net to collect his first victory of the season.
Nate Lewnes led the Retrievers with a game-high five goals, and Pat Young chipped in with a pair of scores and one assist. Souder took the loss in goal despite stopping 11 shots.
Vermont (4-9, 2-2 AE) and UMBC (4-7, 0-4 AE) traded off goals until the midway point of the first quarter. The Retrievers registered a pair of scores in a three-minute span, and added the final goal of the period with under a minute remaining to take a 5-2 lead into the second.
UMBC opened its biggest lead of the contest, 8-3, early in the third period, before Vermont stormed back with four straight tallies. MacKay led the charge with a pair of goals during the stretch, and Milligan and
Michael Clarke added the other tallies as the Catamounts cut their deficit to one goal, 8-7, heading into the fourth quarter.
With the Retrievers leading 10-8 at the 9:34 mark,
Nick Bartlett brought Vermont back within a score on his only goal of the contest. Just over a minute later, Barlow knotted the game up at 10-10 off a feed from MacKay.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the ensuing five minutes, until MacKay beat Souder to put Vermont ahead, 11-10 with 1:08 to play.
Rosenberg and the Vermont defense closed out the victory as UVM collected its first-ever win over UMBC.
