th-ranked Stony Brook, 16-13, in America East Semifinal action Thursday night at Bob Ford Field in Albany.
With the win, Stony Brook improves to 13-4 on the year and advances to play the winner of Albany and Hartford in the championship game on Saturday.
Vermont, which won a program record four conference games this season and earned its best-ever seed in the America East playoffs, finishes the year at 6-10 overall.
"I'm happy with how the year went, obviously we didn't like the way it ended, but we accompished a lot of things that haven't been done before at Vermont. I told the guys after the game there's no reason to hang your heads," said Head Coach
Ryan Curtis, who was named the America East Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
Milligan registered a team-high six points on three goals and three assists, and MacKay tallied five points on four goals and an assist to lead the Vermont attack.
Dyson White chipped in with a pair of goals and assists, while four other Catamounts picked up a goal each.
Mike Rooney tallied a game-high nine points (5 g, 4 ast), and Challen Rogers added three goals to pace the Seawolves on the night.
Justin Rosenberg took the loss for Vermont despite making 10 saves in goal. His counterpart, Hayden Johnstone, stopped nine shots to earn the win for Stony Brook.
James Barlow scored the Catamounts' first goal of the contest early in the first period to knot the score up at 1-1, before
Michael Clarke and MacKay registered back-to-back tallies as Vermont opened a 3-1 advantage.
Stony Brook answered back with a pair of goals to tie things up at 3-3, but MacKay responded with his second goal of the contest at the 3:06 mark to give UVM its first lead, 4-3.
The Catamounts held a 5-4 advantage after trading goals with Stony Brook early in the second period, before the Seawolves registered four straight tallies, including a pair from Rogers, to take an 8-5 advantage with six minutes to play in the half.
MacKay and White registered a goal apiece in the final six minutes of the quarter, and the Catamounts headed into the break trailing by a pair of scores, 9-7.
Stony Brook outscored the Catamounts by a 5-1 margin in the third period to widen its lead to 14-8 with just one quarter to play. Alex Corpolongo led the charge for the Seawolves with a pair of goals in the quarter, while
Nick Bartlett notched the lone Catamount goal.
Following a Stony Brook tally to open the final period, White and Milligan notched back-to-back scores to cut the Vermont deficit to 15-10 with 7:16 to play in the contest.
Rooney responded for the Seawolves with a goal two minutes later to push the lead to 16-10, but Milligan answered with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to bring Vermont back within four, 16-12, with 1:19 remaining.
MacKay notched the final goal with four seconds left, but Vermont fell by a final of 16-13, as Stony Brook earned a berth in the title game on Saturday.
