NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – An early goal by junior
Nikki McFarland held up as the Vermont Catamounts picked up their first win of the 2015 season with a 1-0 victory at Iona in women's soccer action on Sunday.

McFarland gave Vermont a 1-0 advantage just four minutes into the match.
Brooke Jenkins sent a through pass to McFarland who was able to beat the Iona back line. She slotted a low shot to the right corner as Iona goalkeeper Taylor Rice came off her line to challenge the shot.

Vermont held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but the Gaels out shot UVM 4-1 in the final 45 minutes. The Catamount defense was strong the entire game to make McFarland's tally stand up for the victory.

Ally Ramos were credited with two stops each in their respective nets. Ramos picked up her third career shutout and 10
th career win at Vermont.
Vermont (1-1) comes away with a weekend split in the season-opening road trip to New York City. Iona falls to 0-2 on the year.

The Catamounts return to action on Friday (Sept. 4) when they host the 15th edition of the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field. UVM plays Kent State in its home opener on Friday at 4 p.m. Quinnipiac and New Hampshire open the tournament at 1:30 p.m.

The tournament continues on Sunday (Sept. 6) with Kent State facing New Hampshire at 11 a.m. Quinnipiac plays Vermont at 1:30 p.m. to close out the event.
