Vermont improves to 13-5-1 and matches the 1989 and 2000 squads as the only teams to record at least a 13-win season in program history. Binghamton closes the books on a 7-6-6 season.
The third-seeded Catamounts had to play the role of comeback kids against the sixth-seeded Bearcats, but had a few chances in the first half. In the 10th minute, goalie
Aron Runarsson (9 saves) sent a deep goal kick past midfield.
Stefan Lamanna settled the kick and pushed the ball forward to
Bernard Yeboah, who sent a cross to Wright but the pass was just slightly off and rolled over the goal line.
Runarsson made a key save 10 minutes later for the Catamounts. Binghamton's Harrison Weilbacher took a shot from within the six-yard box but Runarrson jumped up and made the save.
Lamanna set Vermont up again for a scoring opportunity just past the halfway point of the first half. The senior brought the ball into the offensive third of the field and found Wright with a pass. Wright made a valid attempt for the game's first goal, but the shot flew just wide of the net.
Binghamton struck first in the 67th minute. Isaiah Barrett dribbled towards the front of the box and dished a pass off to his right through a pair of Catamount defenders. Nikkos Psarras was on the receiving end of the pass and knocked in his fifth goal of the year with a right-footed one-timer.
Vermont pushed the tempo in the following minutes in an attempt to tie the game. On a corner kick, Yeboah leaped up and tried to head in the equalizer, but his shot sailed too wide.
In the 70th minute, Lamanna battled through the Bearcats defense and roped a shot onto Binghamton keeper Alejandro Cubillo (11 saves), but the redshirt freshman keeper made a diving stop to keep the Catamounts off the scoreboard.
The Catamounts broke through in the 87th minute and tied the game from the boot of Yeboah.
Jon Arnar Barðdal sent a through ball to the far corner of the box to the senior forward. Yeboah continued forward and bent a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the net for his 11th goal of the season.
The two squads traded shots throughout the overtime sessions until Wright managed to be in the right spot at the right time.
Shane Haley fired a low shot towards the far post, but Cubillio made a diving stop to this right. On the rebound, Wright hustled to the loose ball in front of the net and touched in his 11th goal of the year.
Vermont will travel to second-seeded Albany on Wednesday (Nov. 9) for the America East semifinal at 7 p.m. Free live video is available in HD at AmericaEast.TV.
