Jenna Janes scored a man-up goal with 5:04 remaining in regulation to help lift the Vermont Catamounts past UMBC, 13-10, in a key America East women's lacrosse game at UMBC Stadium on Saturday.

With the win, the Catamounts keep their playoff hopes alive. UVM moves to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in America East. UMBC falls to 8-7 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.

The Catamounts took a 7-2 lead when
Brynne Yarranton converted a free position shot with 15:31 left in the first half. The Retrievers rallied scoring five of the next eight goals, including a pair off the stick of Lauren McDonald, to cut UVM's lead to three at the break, 9-6.

The teams slowed the pace of the game down in the second half, combining for just eight tallies in the final 30 minutes.

UVM opened the half with back-to-back goals from
Alison Bolt and
Alex Bernier to extend its lead to 11-6. UMBC scored four of the next five foals over an eight-minute span. Carolyn Jamison's tally at the 8:46 mark allowed the Retrievers to climb back within two, 12-10.

Vermont drew a yellow card on UMBC's Sarah Turco at with 5:18 left in the contest. Janes netted her third goal of the game 14 seconds later to give the Catamounts a three-goal cushion.

UMBC won the ensuing draw after the UVM goal and the team's traded possession before
Emma Tizard collected a ground ball with 3:32 left and the Catamounts were able to run out the clock to pick up the victory.

Janes, who entered the game with just two goals on the season, lead the Catamounts with a hat trick. Bernier finished the afternoon with four points on a pair of goals and wo assists and
Meredith Moore added three points on a goal and two assists. Overall, eight players scored for UVM and nine players registered a point in the contest.Â

Sam Nolan paced the UMBC attack, scoring a hat trick and added three assists for six points.

Maddy Kuras was credited with seven saves in the Vermont net to earn the win, while Ashley Peacock made 11 stops for the Retrievers.

Vermont will remain in Maryland as the Catamounts take on Coastal Carolina on Monday (12 p.m.) in a neutral site, non-league game at Maryvale Prep in Lutherville, Maryland. Current Catamounts
