Candice Wright led all scorers with 15 points in addition to three blocks. She now has registered a total of 80 blocks in her career, passing Lauren Buschmann for ninth place all-time in program history. Buschmann logged 78 with the Catamounts from 2009-13.
UVM used a hot start to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Smith made a pair of layups in the stretch and, in between, logged a block to ultimately set up
Hayley Robertson for a layup of her own. While Stony Brook responded with a 9-2 run,
Hanna Crymble ended the quarter with a pull-up jumper to close the period at 10-9 in favor of the Green and Gold.
The early stages of the second stanza followed a very similar back-and-forth nature as was the case in the opening quarter. After Ayshia Baker hit a bucket to give the Seawolves an 11-10 lead, Robertson set up Smith for her third layup. A particularly key sequence for UVM followed with just under 3:30 on the clock.
Hayley Robertson put up a 3-pointer that would not go, but grabbed her own rebound and found
Courtney Wright for an easy layup.
Vermont never trailed in the second half despite a strong effort by the Seawolves to narrow UVM's lead to only one multiple times. A second chance opportunity highlighted the third quarter for UVM, beginning with a missed attempt from downtown by Smith.
Kylie Butler came down with the offensive board and later set up Crymble to draw a blocking foul. Sixteen seconds later, she drained a layup to give the Catamounts a 33-30 lead.
A total of six charity stripe points in the last two minutes by
Candice Wright (5) and Robertson sealed the win for Vermont.
Elizabeth Manner had a team-high 14 points for Stony Brook. Although UVM was held scoreless from 3-point land, the team still posted a 21-for-46 (45.7 percent) day from the field in contrast to the Seawolves' 15-for-58 (25.9 percent) afternoon.
Saturday's result, Vermont's second win in its last three games, moves the Catamounts to 6-14 on the season (3-5 AE), while Stony Brook is now 9-12 overall and 2-6 against America East opponents.
The Catamounts now prepare to embark on the second half of the America East schedule, beginning with a trip to Maine. UVM tips off against the Black Bears on Wednesday (Feb. 1) at 7 p.m. from the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
