Catamounts Downed by Huskies 71-66

FINAL SCORE: Northeastern 71, Vermont 66
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont played a back-and-forth game with former America East rival, Northeastern, but ultimately lost 71-66 on Sunday afternoon on Tom Brennan Court at Patrick Gymnasium.

"I was really pleased with our performance today," said UVM head coach Chris Day. "We won the rebounding battle and we took care of the ball. You have to give Northeastern credit for 15 three-point field goals today and a ton of them were contested. We will get back to work and get ready for Thursday's game against Central Connecticut. We can't wait for the support of 1200 screaming kids at 11 a.m."

Despite the loss, three Catamounts scored in double-figures. Hanna Crymble registered 32 points and recorded six rebounds. It was the second game this season in which Crymble scored more than 30 points on her home court. She posted a career-high 37 on Nov. 17 against Howard.

Kristina White posted double-figures for a second straight game, with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals in the loss to the Huskies. Sydney Smith scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her return to the lineup.

Northeastern was paced offensively by sophomore Shannon Todd, who recorded a career-high 22 points and recorded six rebounds. Junior guard Jess Genco added 18 points, four rebounds and seven assists.

Despite having five players average double-figures in scoring, only two Huskies were able to eclipse the 10-point park in the contest.

Vermont won the rebounding battle 32-26. Both teams committed 15 turnovers respectively. The Catamounts outscored the Huskies in the paint 30-12. However, UVM made just six of 22 three-point attempts, and White hit four of them.

The Catamounts led for the majority of the second quarter after Genco hit a buzzer-beating three to give the Huskies the lead after the first period.

Northeastern closed the quarter on a 10-0 run and carried a 33-30 lead into halftime. UVM took the lead for a brief stretch in the third quarter until its opponent from Boston used a balanced attack to pull ahead and not look back in the fourth. The Catamounts fought until the end but the Huskies were able to hold them off.

As a team, Vermont shot 46% from the field, 27% from downtown and 75% at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Northeastern went 46% from the floor, 44% from distance and 89% at the line.

Senior point guard Katie Lavelle grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists for the Catamounts, while Hayley Robertson stole the ball three times in eight minutes off the bench.

Candice Wright scored six points for Vermont and added another blocked shot to her all-time UVM record total.

Vermont is now 2-9 on the regular season, while Northeastern improves to 4-5 with the victory. The Huskies snapped a three-game losing streak while the Catamounts' extends to seven straight.

The Catamounts return to action this Thursday (Dec. 21) for an 11 a.m. contest against Central Connecticut State University at Patrick Gym. It is the final non-conference home game and the second-to-last non-conference game for UVM in total. The next home game after Thursday will be on Jan. 3.

Thursday's early start is due to Catamount Classroom presented by Vermont's 529 college savings program, administered by VSAC. All local middle and elementary schools are invited to attend this game free of charge for a day full of education and basketball.

Video coverage of the Central Connecticut game can be found on ESPN3. Alastair Ingram handles the play-by-play duties alongside color analyst and Vermont men's basketball alumnus, Bernie Cieplicki.

Logan Ratick has the play-by-play call for Thursday's meeting with CCSU on CatamounTV.com as well as the flagship station for UVM women's basketball, News/Talk 620 WVMT-AM. Pregame coverage begins at 10:40 a.m. with an 11 a.m. tip-off from Tom Brennan Court at Patrick Gym.
