BURLINGTON, Vt. - Student-athletes from the UVM men's and women's soccer teams helped referee and operate the scoreboard at the sixth annual Zach Stamatis Power Soccer Tournament at Patrick Gym last Sunday.
The Vermont Chargers hosted the tournament in honor of Zach Stamatis, a passionate rookie on the team, who suffered complications from a car accident in 2011. The all-day tournament featured teams from New England and Canada. The games consisted of four players on two teams, who used power wheelchairs with a cage attached to the front of their chair and the game ball was an oversized soccer ball.
"It was fun to be a part of this tournament and see the competitiveness of the power soccer athletes," senior captain
Arthur Bacquet said. "The passion of the coaches and players was very inspiring."
The Chargers were founded in 2010 and members of the Northeast Disabled Athletic Association. The tournament serves as a fundraiser for the team in hopes of attending the national power soccer competition in Indiana. For more information on the Vermont Chargers, visit
