WEST POINT, N.Y. – The UVM men's soccer team fought back and tied the game in the second half, but suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat to San Diego State on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

Vermont splits its opening weekend with a 1-1 record while San Diego State also improves to 1-1 on the season.
The Aztecs netted the first goal of the game in the 12th minute after Jeroen Meefout played a ball from the right side of the box and then buried a shot into the back of the net for the early score.
As halftime approached,
Jon Arnar Barðdal tried to tie game at 1-1. The sophomore's initial shot was blocked by an Aztec defender but he got his own rebound and sent another shot towards the net but the attempt was too high.
In the 60th minute, Vermont keeper
Aron Runarsson (4 saves) came through in the clutch to keep SDSU's lead at 1-0. Illai Shvika had a breakaway opportunity and lined a shot at Runarsson for the intial save, but the rebound bounced right back to Shvika. The Aztec attacker ripped another attempt but the Icelandic sophomore made a diving save to keep the Catamounts in the game.
Geo Alves notched his third goal of the season in the 69th minute and tied the game at 1-1 for the Catamounts. The junior inserted a pass into the box off a corner kick, but the pass was deflected right back to him where he booted the equalizer past the SDSU defense and goalie Max Watkin (1 save).
The Aztecs scored the walk-off goal in the 95th minute after Dallin Cutler broke free on the right side and tapped in the game-winner past the outreach of Runarsson.
Vermont returns home to host the Peter Baldwin Classic, presented by Morgan Stanley, on Friday (Sept. 1) and Sunday, Sept. 3 at Virtue Field. The tournament field includes Central Connecticut State, Florida Gulf Coast, and Niagara. UVM will host Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 7 p.m. in the return of former head coach Jesse Cormier. The weekend will wrap up with UVM and Niagara on Sunday at 2 p.m.
