Box Score
Vermont improves to 2-1 on the season and moves to 2-0 at home for the second time in four years while Florida International drops to 0-3.
In the first half, the Catamounts controlled the offensive tempo and held a 10-3 shot advantage despite the scoreboard reading all zeros at the break.
Early in the second half,
Sydney Cammeyer set up the offense with a forward pass to
Sarah Martin, who fired a shot from inside of the box but could not generate the contest's first score as the attempt was wide to the right.
With under 10 minutes left in regulation, FIU's Grace Wilson pushed the ball upfield and launched a shot from about 20 yards out that bounced off the crossbar and out of play for the Catamounts.
As the clocked ticked down to the final minutes, Isabella de Almagro had another chance to net go-ahead score for the Panthers with a deep shot attempt but Vermont goalkeeper
Coco Speckmaier (5 saves) dove to her left and made the clutch save to preserve the shutout.
On UVM's next possession, Martin and
Ella Bankert nearly gave the Green and Gold a late lead. On a free kick from outside of the 18-yard box, Martin bent a shot around a three-defender wall and made FIU keeper Nevena Stojakovic (7 saves) make a diving save. The rebound bounced in Bankert's favor but the freshman could not get an angle on the put-back.
In the extra session, the Catamounts were on the attack when
Brooke Jenkins trapped a clear attempt by the Panthers' defense. Jenkins fed a low through ball to Yurick who stretched out her right foot and tapped the game-winning shot into the right side of the net past Stojakovic.
