BOSTON – University of Vermont men's and women's cross country each finished 12th at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College at Franklin Park on Friday.

The women's team recorded 359 points in the 22-team field and the men notched 328 points among 18 teams.
Included in the men's field (8K) were Syracuse (No. 3), Indiana (No. 21) and Illinois (No. 27), all of which are ranked in the USTFCCCA Week 2 National Coaches' Poll. No. 7 Providence, No. 18 Indiana and No. 25 Georgetown competed in the women's 5K.
"Today was a great opportunity to race multiple nationally ranked teams at the same time," said head coach
Matt Belfield. "I thought
Katie Nolan and
Gavin Schmeck both raced very well to lead our teams today. I want to mention
Aaron Lucci's and
Isaac Grosner's excellent performances as well. The women need to rest up a bit as we've been going hard for several weeks in a row now."
For Vermont in the women's race, Nolan turned in the top performance at 18:25 for 59th overall, followed by junior
Autumn Albrecht (70th) at 18:33. Just a second apart were junior
Samantha Sayer (18:39) and junior
Lauren Trumble (18:40), who claimed 79th and 80th overall. Senior
Anna Kaplan wrapped up the Catamount scorers with a time of 18:42, taking 85th of 189 runners.
In the men's race Schmeck turned in a time of 25:22 to lead UVM and finish 47th overall in the field of 157. Freshman
Tyler Marshall was next for the Green and Gold (58th, 25:31), while Lucci (67th, 25:38) and sophomore
Jack Carmody (82nd, 25:48) were No. 3 and No. 4 for Vermont. With a time of 25:58, Grosner took the No. 5 spot for the Catamounts and 92nd overall.
"I expect improvements on both sides in two weeks here at the New England Championships," Belfield added.
Next on the docket for Vermont are the New England Championships, which will take place at Franklin Park on Saturday, Oct. 7.
