The Catamounts fall to 4-6 with the loss and 0-1 in America East play. UNH is now 4-5 and an even 1-1 against league foes.
Lena Benwood had nine saves for UVM and the Wildcats' Kelsey Rudert earned the victory with three stops.
Van den Brekel opened the scoring for the day in the 12th minute. After taking a mid-circle feed from Jessica Schmidt, she turned and blasted her second goal of 2017. That would prove to be the lone goal scored in the opening 35 minutes.
A quick pair of tallies early in the second half then extended UNH's lead to three by the 43rd minute. Van den Brekel assisted on Ashley Mendonca's goal following a corner, then the former deflected a cage-mouth pass at the left post.
Vermont managed to narrow the deficit to two in the 44th minute courtesy of
Landon Warren's team-leading ninth tally this season.
Jackie Gillen blasted the ball from mid-right circle; with Warren camped at the right post behind Rudert, the initial shot was deflected below the crossbar into the cage.
The Catamounts had chances to inch closer but Rudert and UNH were able to weather through each opportunity unscathed.
Pleun Haantjes had a shot blocked before Warren was denied by Rudert in the final stages of regulation.
Next on the docket for Vermont is a Sunday (Oct. 1) matchup with No. 18 Albany. That contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Moulton Winder Field.
