BURLINGTON, Vt.– Vermont split a two-game homestand with a 53-47 win over Hartford on Tom Brennan Court at Patrick Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. It was UVM's third win in America East Play and the Catamounts' first game against the Hawks this season.

"This was a much-needed win after dropping a heartbreaker to UNH on Thursday," said Vermont head coach,
Chris Day. "Our two practices leading up to this game were phenomenal and it showed today. I am very happy for our kids."

Vermont was scorching to start the game, leading 14-7 after the first quarter and increasing that lead to 34-13 at the break (the largest halftime lead for UVM this season).
However, the Hawks responded in the second half, going on a 34-11 run in the first 15 minutes of the half to take their first lead of the game. The Catamounts played clean enough in the final few minutes and iced the contest at the free throw line.

UVM featured three double-digit scorers in the game. Senior captain
Sydney Smith scored 15 points, recorded seven rebounds and collected two assists for the Catamounts.

Meanwhile,
Hanna Crymble led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist. She went 6-9 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line. The sophomore has scored double-figures in each of her last 16 games, and 17 times through the first 19 games of the year.

Off the bench,
Hayley Robertson dropped 14 points (3-4 3PT), grabbed three boards and dished out a pair of assists.
Candice Wright added six rebounds in key minutes as a reserve.

With the win, the Catamounts snap a three-game conference losing streak. With the loss, the Hawks have lost three of their last four outings.

Only two players reached double-figures in the scoring column for Hartford: Jade Young (13 pts) and Darby Lee (11). The Hawks are now 12-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

With the victory, the Catamounts are 6-13 overall, 5-6 at home and 3-3 in America East play. Their next meeting with the Hawks comes in Connecticut on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. Â

Vermont won the rebounding battle 38-31 and committed 26 turnovers to Hartford's 13. UVM collected 16 assists as a unit, with seven of them belonging to
Katie Lavelle.

As a team, Vermont shot 49% from the field, 28% from downtown (5-18) and 100% at the free throw line (8-8). Meanwhile, Hartford went 22% from the floor, 11% from distance (3-27) and 82% at the foul line (18-22).

With the victory, the Cat's Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual have donated another $100 to the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington, bringing this year's total to 76 wins and $7,600 donated.

Next up, the Catamounts head back on the road for just one game. The first is an 11 p.m. tilt at Albany on Wed., Jan. 24. It is the first meeting of the season between Vermont and Albany. The Great Danes won 78-75 at UMBC on Sunday afternoon.
