BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Providence Friars (8-2-0, 5-1-0 WHEA) opened the scoring in the second period and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Vermont Catamounts (2-6-3, 2-5-1 WHEA) on Flat Fee Real Estate Night Sunday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

"We played as a team today and were very effective for large portions of the game," said head coach Jim Plumer. "We are clearly snakebit right now when it comes to scoring, but if we play like we did today against a quality opponent, we will have plenty of wins this season."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Vermont pushed the pace in the first period outshooting the Friars 10-6. Four of the Catamounts' 10 shots came from inside the slot, with Theresa Schafzahl and Alyssa Holmes creating quality scoring chances against Madison Myers (24 saves).
Providence's offense kicked into gear in the middle frame with a 15-7 shot advantage and the game-winning goal by Maureen Murphy. Murphy received a pass from Avery Fransoo in the neutral zone and sprinted into the Catamounts' zone before snapping a shot under the glove of Melissa Black (24 saves).
Christina Putigna doubled the Friars' lead on the power play with 7:16 left in the third period. The senior forward cycled the puck with Emily Landry and elected to shoot from the top of the circles through traffic for the two-goal lead.
UVM pulled Melissa Black in the final minutes of regulation to bring on the extra attacker. With the 6-on-5 advantage, the Catamounts had several scoring chances, especially on a point-shot by Maude Poulin-Labelle. The rookie defender snapped a shot through heavy traffic with the rebound kicking out to Kristina Shanahan. Shanahan quickly fired, and Ali O'Leary batted the second rebound, but the Cats were denied by Myers.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Catamounts visit Boston University for a two-game series next weekend at Walter Brown Arena. They open the Hockey East series Friday (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. start Saturday (Nov. 17) afternoon.
