COACH'S QUOTE
"A very difficult way to lose, soccer can be a brutal game," head coach
Rob Dow said. " I want to thank all of our seniors for their contributions and sacrifices to the program."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Geo Alves and Jonathan Bryant teamed up on a corner kick. Alves bent a kick into the center of the box and Bryant buried a header into an empty left side of the net.
- The Retrievers found the equalizer in the 62nd minute from Matt Bailey. Near midfield, Jordon Dove sent a header towards the front of the box. Bailey tracked down the feed and drove a line drive towards Clay Thomas (6 saves) in net. Thomas deflected the shot with his gloves but the ball trickled over the goal line for the score.
- As the match moved into the first overtime period, Bryant bent a cross towards the penalty area with Lucas Shaw on the receiving end, but Shaw misfired left of the near post.
- In the second overtime, Manuel Camara gathered a clear attempt from 20 yards out. The freshman fired a line drive towards the center of the net and Quantell Jones (4 saves) had the ball slip through his fingers, but the freshman keeper recovered the ball before it crossed the goal line.
- In the shootout, UMBC missed its first-round attempt but UVM converted its first four kicks and held a 4-3 advantage heading into the fifth round. UMBC's relief goalie Ciaran O'Loughlin kept the game alive with his kick, then stopped Alves to force sudden-death extra rounds. After each team missed their sixth-round kicks, UMBC's Jackson Becher finished his seventh-round kick and O'Laughlin blocked Bryant's final bid for the shootout win.
