COACH'S QUOTE

"A difficult result to swallow when we battled back twice to equalize in the match," said head coach Rob Dow. "Ultimately this weekend's games were a very good test for our team on the road and we'll head back to Burlington to tweak some things we will see on film to be ready for Northeastern Friday night at 7 p.m."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a penalty kick from Proch. He placed the shot perfectly in the bottom left corner of the net past Vermont's Clay Thomas who was making his second career start.
  • Thomas made four saves in the first half as the Blue Devils tried without avail to increase their lead.
  • The Catamounts came out strong in the second half and were eventually awarded in the 69th minute. Justin Freitas received a through ball from Jon Arnar Barddal and was able to beat two Duke defenders before floating the ball to Geo Alves who headed the equalizer past Duke's Will Pulisic for his first goal of the season.
  • Vermont just missed taking its first lead of the afternoon in the 72nd minute. Jon Bryant narrowly missed the far post with a chance from just outside the 18-yard box.
  • A minute later Duke regained the lead, as Kevin Feucht scored his first goal as a Blue Devil. Feucht pounced on a loose ball in the box after a Duke free kick and slotted it past Thomas.
  • In the 84th minute Alves struck again for the Catamounts to push the game into overtime. Trevor Colazzo headed a long ball from Thomas towards the box and Alves was able to gain possession between two Duke defenders and fire a quick shot past Pulisic.
  • In the 92nd minute Proch notched his fourth career game-winning goal to seal the deal for Duke. Vermont's Thomas made a diving stop, his eighth of the game, off an initial opportunity from Seth Kuhn, but was unable to keep the rebound from going right to Proch on the doorstep.
NOTES
  • Geo Alves, Clay Thomas and Justin Freitas were named to the 2018 John Rennie Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team.
  • This afternoon was Alves' first multi-goal game since picking up two goals and an assist in his collegiate debut against Hartwick on August 25, 2017.
  • Duke midfielder Daniele Proch was named the tournament MVP with three goals on the weekend.
