COACH'S QUOTE
"I thought we had a good response from Colgate," head coach Rob Dow said. "Our game plan was to press which steps up our backline, steps up our midfield, and creates more and more numbers towards the goal. We reassured our fans that we are ready to open conference play this weekend. Conference play is a completely different animal and we have plenty of players with conference experience."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geo Alves tallied the lone goal of the evening in the 10th minute. From midfield, Daði Bærings Halldórsson lofted a feed into the box for the senior forward. Alves raced past the Saints' backline on the left side of the box and tapped a shot towards the far post. The ball bounced off the inside of the right upright and into the back of the net.
  • The Catamounts stayed on the attack over the ensuing minutes. In the 16th minute, Alves took a corner kick and sent a ball to the far end of the box. Justin Freitas fired a right-footed shot towards near post but a Siena defender made the goal line save. On the rebound, Ívar Örn Árnason went top shelf but the attempt clanked off the crossbar.
  • UVM was close to adding an insurance goal in the late minutes. Alex Nagy has his shot stopped by Siena goalie Greg Monroe (5 saves) and Trevor Colazzo tried to finish the chance but the senior misfired wide right.
  • In the final minute, the non-conference rivals each had a scoring chance. With 53 seconds left, Freitas sprinted in front of the net but his kick sailed over the crossbar. On the other end of the field, Siena rushed to get a corner kick off in time. Conor McGlynn bent a ball into the center of the box but UVM keeper Clay Thomas (4 saves) picked it off to seal the win.
NOTES
  • Thomas has recorded three straight clean sheets.
  • The Catamounts have won five out of their last six games.
  • UVM's victory is the third straight against Siena and moves to 10-1 in the all-time series.
  • With the victory, the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate another $100 to the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington, bringing this year's total to 69 wins and $6,900.
