OCEAN STATE THRILLER
With two seconds left in overtime at the University of Rhode Island, URI senior guard David Dale knocked down a contested three to lift the Rams to a 77-74 win over Vermont Monday night at the Ryan Center.
Vermont fell to 2-4 on the season with the loss. Sophomore guard
Rose Caverly had a career-high 17 points, and tied a career-high with eight assists. She also gathered eight rebounds.
TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Hanna Crymble has been showing up on the stat sheet in a big way every game. Her 30 points and 10 rebounds against URI locked in her third straight double-double.
Crymble found 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Navy, with 10 points and 11 rebounds against Bryant in the home opener. This is the first time in her career she has posted a double-double in consecutive games. Crymble has amassed seven career double-doubles. Her 30-point-game was the fourth of her career, with two of the four coming against URI. She is now tied with Aaron Yantzi ('04) for the fourth most 30-point-games in a career.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
UMass started its season with a nine-day trip to Portugal in August. They swept three teams across the country in exhibitions and then returned home to prepare for the non-conference slate. A 3-3 start has brought them wins by more than 50 points and a few tight losses. UMass won at UMass Lowell 74-58 and hosted Hartford in a 74-48 Minutewomen win.
The Minutewomen are led by the duo of Destiney Philoxy and Hailey Leidel who average over 14 points-per-game. Philoxy dropped 14 in the most recent 82-71 loss at St. John's. Leidel has shot 44% from beyond-the-arc, connecting with 19 3-pointers in her six starts.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's game renews a series that began in 1971. The Minutewomen and Catamounts have met 29 times since then, including 11 seasons in a row from 1973-1983. They have not met since December of 2009, a meeting the Catamounts took 57-38 in Amherst. Vermont has won each of the last two games in the series, but UMass holds a 22-7 overall record against the 'Cats.
CATHY INGLESE PATCHES
This season the Catamounts are wearing jersey patches to honor our former Head Coach Cathy Inglese. Inglese was the head coach at Vermont for seven seasons, from 1986 to 1993. She led UVM to unprecedented success with its first two conference titles, in 1992 and 1993, and its first two trips to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
These patches will be worn at home and on the road this season to honor the memory of Coach Inglese who tragically passed away this summer. Cathy was also the head coach at Rhode Island from 2009-2014.
POSTER DAY SUNDAY
UVM hosts Saint Francis in the first meeting between the two schools at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 1. Following the game, the women's basketball team will be signing team posters presented by UVM Print and Mail.
Rise To The Top is the presenting sponsor of the 2019-20 women's basketball season.
