TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State (7-4-0, Independent) scored a pair of second period goals and took a 2-1 victory over Vermont (1-9-1, 0-6-1 HEA) behind 29 saves from Evan DeBrouwer in the first-ever meeting between the two schools Friday night at Oceanside Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Vermont and Arizona State finished a scoreless opening period with 12 shots on goal apiece. Sophomore Joey Cipollone had the best chance of the frame on the penalty kill, but his breakaway shot was turned aside by DeBrouwer (29 saves).
• Sun Devil junior James Sanchez put the Sun Devils up 1-0 at 6:25 of the second period on the power play. Josh Maniscalco found Sanchez at the right faceoff dot and the junior roofed a one-timer over Stefanos Lekkas (31 saves).
• The Catamounts had two odd-man rushes late in the second period that ended in saves by DeBrouwer. Cipollone's shot was stopped at 14:55 and Matt O'Donnell's chance was turned aside at 16:04 of the frame.
• Sanchez added his second of the game on a 4-on-3 advantage at 18:30 of the middle frame. Sanchez carried the puck down the middle of the zone before firing a shot from the slot for the two-goal lead.
• Ace Cowans banged a rebound past DeBrouwer at 2:55 of the period to pull Vermont within one. Jacques Bouquot and Vlad Dzhioshvili each had initial shots on goal and assisted on the junior's first goal of the season.

GAME NOTES

• Dzhioshvili also found the scoresheet for the first time this season with the assist. The junior leads Catamount forwards with a +2 rating this season.
• Arizona State was 2-for-3 on the power play with Sanchez netting both man-up goals. Vermont was 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.
• The Sun Devils finished the game with a 33-31 advantage in shots. ASU blocked 15 shots compared to 11 blocked shots at the other end of the ice for UVM.
• Maniscalco and Brinson Pasichnuk assisted on both of Sanchez's power play goals.
